OpenAI Sora 2 | Video and audio model expands creative control

OpenAI has introduced Sora 2, its flagship video and audio generation model, with improved physical accuracy, stronger controllability, synchronized dialogue, and sound effects. Published on September 30, 2025, the announcement positions Sora 2 as a major step for AI video generation and creative workflows, while also launching a new Sora iOS app for creation, remixing, and social video experiences.

Sora 2 gives creators more control over AI video and sound


Sora 2 is designed to improve how AI video systems understand motion, physical interaction, object persistence, and failure. OpenAI says prior video models often distorted reality to satisfy a prompt, while Sora 2 is better at following physical constraints, such as a missed basketball shot rebounding instead of teleporting into the hoop.


For designers, video editors, and visual creators, the most important change is control. OpenAI says Sora 2 can follow intricate instructions across multiple shots while preserving world state, and it can produce realistic, cinematic, and anime-style outputs with synchronized dialogue, sound effects, and background soundscapes.



How Sora 2 changes AI video production


OpenAI describes Sora 2 as a general-purpose video and audio generation system. The model can create sophisticated visual scenes along with speech, sound effects, and environmental audio, which makes it more relevant for creators who need complete scene direction rather than silent clips or isolated visual experiments.


The announcement also introduces the Sora app, a social iOS experience powered by Sora 2. Inside the app, users could create and remix videos, discover content through a customizable feed, and use a feature called characters to bring verified likenesses into Sora-generated scenes after a one-time video and audio recording.


New creative workflows for visual production


For creative teams, Sora 2 points toward more complete previsualization workflows. A designer, editor, or art director could describe camera movement, mood, action, environment, character behavior, and sound design in a single prompt, then evaluate whether the generated scene supports the intended composition and pacing.


The stronger physics behavior is also important for production review. When AI video models can represent failed actions, object continuity, and realistic movement more consistently, creators gain more useful drafts for storyboards, motion concepts, pitch visuals, social clips, anime-style scenes, and cinematic tests.


Even so, Sora 2 should still be treated as a creative tool that requires review. Designers and editors still need to check anatomy, continuity, brand safety, likeness permissions, accessibility, sound quality, and final editing requirements before using AI-generated scenes in professional or public-facing projects.


Availability and product status


OpenAI launched the Sora iOS app first in the United States and Canada, with invite-based access and plans to expand to additional countries. The company also said Sora 2 would initially be available for free with generous limits, while ChatGPT Pro users would be able to use an experimental higher-quality Sora 2 Pro model on sora.com.


However, OpenAI’s official page also states that, as of April 26, 2026, the Sora product is no longer available. For creators, that means the announcement remains important as a reference for AI video development, but availability should always be checked directly through OpenAI before planning any production workflow around Sora.
