Canva | Gemini and Google Search Bring Design Into AI Conversations

Canva is expanding its conversational design tools through direct integrations with Google Gemini and AI Mode in Google Search. Creators can move from research or an early idea to templates, branded designs, prompt-based edits, and editable layouts without rebuilding the visual direction in a separate workflow.

Research and design can begin inside the same conversation

Inside AI Mode in Google Search, a creator can ask Canva to provide template options for a project such as a flyer, presentation, or promotional graphic. The selected template can then be opened in Canva for detailed editing and final adjustments.

The workflow can also begin with a visual generated in AI Mode. Instead of treating that image as the finished result, users can export it to Canva for editing, printing, or sharing. This creates a more direct path from researching a topic to preparing a visual asset around the information that was discovered.

The Canva connector brings design actions into Gemini

Canva's AI Connector is powered by its MCP Server and connects a Canva account directly with the Gemini app. After enabling the connection, users can type @Canva to generate a new design, browse existing Canva content, search for a specific project, or summarize information stored in a design.

The connection also supports practical editing tasks. Creators can rewrite headlines, update text or images across slides, translate content for another audience, and resize a design for different platforms through natural language prompts. This allows an existing project to be adapted without explaining its complete structure again in every request.

Brand Kit helps maintain the intended visual identity

Teams can reference a Canva Brand Kit when prompting the connector, allowing generated designs to reflect their established colors, fonts, and visual identity from the beginning. This can reduce the amount of manual correction required when preparing campaign graphics or presentation variations.

Canva Enterprise teams can also autofill brand templates using context from a Gemini conversation. The feature can help transform research, planning notes, or campaign information into an existing approved format while preserving the editable structure needed for review.

Magic Layers turns generated images into editable layouts

A Gemini-generated image can be opened in Canva with Magic Layers, which analyzes the flattened visual and rebuilds it as a layered design. Text can become editable text boxes, objects can be separated into individual elements, and the background can remain available behind the foreground content.

This gives creators more control than repeatedly generating an entire image to correct one detail. Elements can be repositioned or resized, fonts and colors can be changed, and the layout can be refined while preserving the original composition as a starting point.

IMPORTANT: Connected apps in AI Mode began rolling out in the United States during the week of July 16, 2026. Magic Layers is currently in public beta in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, with global availability planned for later.{alertWarning}

Daisuki's Take: What This Means for Designers

The most useful part of these integrations is the continuity between research, conversation, and visual production. A creator can develop an idea with Gemini or Search and begin shaping the corresponding design before the project context becomes fragmented across several tools.

Magic Layers also addresses an important limitation of AI-generated images: a visually promising result is often difficult to correct because its text, objects, and background have been flattened together. Converting that result into separate elements makes it more practical as working material.

We would still review every generated or automatically adapted design before publishing it. Brand consistency, translations, text accuracy, object separation, and layout balance require human judgment, especially when the result will be used for a client, campaign, or public-facing asset.
