OpenAI | ChatGPT Work Turns Complex Projects Into Finished Work
OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Work, an agent designed to move beyond short conversations and complete longer, multi-step projects. It can gather context from connected applications and files, plan an approach, create finished documents or visual materials, and continue working while the user reviews progress and approves important actions.
ChatGPT moves from conversation to completed project work
ChatGPT Work is intended for projects that require more time, context, and coordination than a typical chat request. A user can describe the desired outcome, provide reference files and review criteria, and let the agent divide the project into smaller steps that it can complete over an extended session.
Powered by GPT-5.6 and technology developed for Codex, Work can navigate uncertain instructions, ask questions when necessary, and revise its approach as the project develops. Users can follow its progress, answer questions, change direction, and inspect the finished deliverables instead of waiting for one final response without visibility.
Files, plugins, and templates become shared project context
ChatGPT Work can gather information from the applications where a project already lives. Plugins can connect services such as Google Drive, SharePoint, Slack, Microsoft Teams, email, calendars, customer management platforms, and project trackers, giving the agent access to relevant context when the user has authorized it.
That context can be combined with uploaded references, existing templates, preferred formats, and project instructions. For a creative team, one workflow could begin with research and meeting notes, continue into a campaign brief, and finish with a presentation, spreadsheet, document, or set of materials adapted for different audiences.
Documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and Sites
Work can produce polished documents, slide decks, spreadsheets, reports, and analyses while following the structure of the references supplied by the user. This gives designers and content teams a way to carry visual requirements, source information, and editorial decisions through several connected deliverables.
OpenAI is also introducing Sites in public beta. Sites can turn ideas, plans, and project data into interactive dashboards, trackers, launch calendars, prototypes, internal portals, reports, and web apps that can be tested inside ChatGPT and shared through a URL. A Site can also be updated when its underlying information changes.
Scheduled Tasks and work across desktop, web, and mobile
Scheduled Tasks allow ChatGPT Work to run once, repeat on a schedule, respond to a trigger, or monitor for changes. A recurring workflow could review new feedback, refresh a meeting document, update a presentation, or produce a report when information changes in a connected application.
Cloud projects can continue across web, mobile, and desktop. The desktop app adds access to local files and applications with permission, as well as a built-in browser for working with websites and online tools. Local files should be limited to the material required for the task, while cloud and workspace access remains subject to the controls configured for the account.

ChatGPT Work is most useful for designers when a project includes more than one isolated creative task. Research, reference analysis, planning, written content, presentations, spreadsheets, and interactive Sites can remain connected instead of being recreated in separate conversations.
We should still treat the finished materials as drafts that require creative review. A presentation can follow a template and still need better hierarchy, a spreadsheet can contain formulas that should be checked, and an automatically updated Site can introduce visual or factual inconsistencies when its source information changes.
The practical advantage is continuity. When the agent can retain the brief, references, constraints, and previous decisions across several stages, designers can spend less time transferring context and more time evaluating whether the final work is accurate, consistent, and ready for its intended audience.
