Adobe Substance 3D | OpenPBR Expands Across Faster 3D Workflows

Adobe Substance 3D is expanding its connected 3D workflow with Painter 12.1, wider OpenPBR support, updated procedural tools, a larger asset library, and an end-to-end approach to digital twins. These changes focus on reducing manual corrections and keeping materials more predictable as artists move assets between applications and renderers.

OpenPBR moves across the Substance 3D ecosystem


OpenPBR support is now available in Substance 3D Painter 12.1 after previously arriving in Designer 16 and Sampler. Adobe is also converting more than 14,000 materials, decals, and atlases from the Substance 3D Assets library to the open material standard.


The goal is to make physically based materials behave more consistently when they move between creative applications and renderers. Adobe has also released its production-tested OpenPBR implementation as an open-source project, giving developers and production teams another way to integrate the standard into their pipelines.



Painter 12.1 makes baking corrections more direct


Substance 3D Painter 12.1 introduces Skew Map Painting, a feature designed to correct distortion artifacts created during texture baking. Artists can paint corrections with a brush, modify complete polygons with Polygon Fill, and use Edge Protection to keep adjustments from affecting neighboring mesh edges.


Auto Rebake further reduces waiting time by recalculating only the parts of a mesh affected by a change instead of rebaking the complete project. The release also includes a reorganized baking workspace and a Hard Surface Auto UV mode that creates orthographically aligned UV layouts for mechanical and hard-surface assets.


Designer and Sampler add more material control


Substance 3D Designer 16 expands procedural creation with the redesigned Shape Splatter v2 node and new Signed Distance Field nodes. These tools allow artists to generate and manipulate more complex forms inside the node graph, while a new 3D Viewer node provides real-time visual feedback during material development.


Substance 3D Sampler now includes Material Creation Templates that automatically prepare the channels and settings required for common material types, including OpenPBR materials. Creators can also save custom templates when a project or production pipeline needs the same configuration across multiple assets.


The asset library continues to expand


Adobe added 848 materials and 2,736 models to the Substance 3D Assets library during the previous year, bringing the collection to 23,516 assets. The additions include adaptable resources for product visualization, environments, games, motion design, and other projects that require detailed materials or ready-to-use models.


The collection also introduces the Shattered World Signature Collection by Kai Mergener, with fifteen dark fantasy materials. For visual creators, curated collections can provide a faster starting point while leaving room to adjust surfaces, colors, wear, and procedural properties for a specific art direction.


Digital twins connect product design and visualization


Adobe demonstrated a connected workflow that moves product data from CAD into a digital twin using standards such as USD and OpenPBR. This approach can help teams review a product, prepare photorealistic visuals, and create marketing content before a physical prototype is available.


Connected materials and product data can also reduce the need to rebuild the same asset for each visualization stage. Adobe describes this foundation as part of a longer-term path toward AI-assisted workflows, but the current announcement primarily focuses on interoperability, material accuracy, and scalable 3D production.

The practical value of this update is consistency. A detailed material loses much of its usefulness when every application interprets it differently, so extending OpenPBR across Painter, Designer, Sampler, and the asset library can reduce corrections during handoffs.


Painter 12.1 also addresses smaller problems that can consume a surprising amount of production time. Selective rebaking and direct skew correction may not change how an asset is designed, but they can make iteration less disruptive when an artist is refining complex textures.


We would view the digital twin workflow as the broader direction rather than an immediate AI feature. The current tools establish a more connected 3D pipeline, while their future value will depend on how reliably open standards, automation, and AI-assisted processes work together in real production environments.
